A Young Outspoken Activist for LGBT Rights
Jazz Jennings is notable for being one of the youngest publicly documented people to be labeled as transgender. She is a national transgender figure.
She came to the public limelight in 2007 through an interview with Barbra Walters that aired on 20/20. Shedrew the worlds attention for the innocence with which she was able toarticulate her thoughts and feelings on the transgender experience. The interview led to other highly regarded appearances and interviews.
Jazz is the co-founder of the TranskidsPurple Rainbow Foundation. She founded it with her parents to assist transgender youth. She later created Purple Rainbow Tails, a company whereby she fashions mermaid tails to raise money for transgender children.
Jazz hosts a chain of YouTube videos about her life, named I am Jazz. She also stars in the reality television series of the same title. The series highlights her life with her family as a teenage transgender youth.
I am Jazz: A Family in Transition is a documentary about her life and her family. It premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2011.
Jazz went through a confrontation with the United States Soccer Foundation to allow her to play on girls teams. Withthe help of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, she was able tochange the foundations policies to allow trans students to play.
Jazz has also written a childrens book, I am Jazz. It chronicles her life as a transgender child.She has been named as one of the 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014 by Time. She was acknowledged as the youngest person ever featured on Outs Out 100 and Advocates 40 under 40 lists.
Jazz was recognized as a Human Rights Campaign Youth Ambassador. She received Logo TVs 2014 Youth Trailblazer Award.
A year later, she was involved in a deal with Johnson&Johnson to appear in Clean&Clear commercials. Jazz acted as a spokesmodel for the commercials digital campaign and shared the trials of growing up as a transgender. She later authored a piece for Time magazines 100 Most Influential People.
Last year, she published a memoir called Being Jazz: My Life as a Transgender Teen.
She is a YouTuber whose videos range from information about being transgender to makeup tutorials. The channel has 350 thousand plus subscribers.
According to Jazz, her channel shows that transgender people are just like everyone else and they need to embrace their differences to create freedom and equity for all.
Recently, the Tonner Doll Company announced plans to produce a doll modeled after Jazz Jennings.
Before even turning twenty, Jazz has greatly redefined the publics perspective on transgenders.
