A Powerful Media Personality

Oprah was described as the worlds most powerful woman by CNN and Time.com. The American Spectator called her the most influential woman in the world and one of the 100 people who most influenced the 20th Century. Life Magazine highlighted a cover story profile and called her Americas most powerful woman.

Oprah was accepted into the NAACP Image Award Hall of Fame. She is a media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer and philanthropist. She is popularly known for her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the highest rated television program of its kind in history.

Oprah has been ranked as the richest African-American and the greatest black philanthropist in American history. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. She received honorary degrees from Duke and Harvard Universities.

She landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. She later launched her own production company and became internationally syndicated.
Oprah is credited with popularizing and revolutionizing the tabloid talk show genre. Her talk show broke 20th Century taboos and enabled LGBT people to enter the mainstream. She is recognized for overcoming adversity to become an inspiration to others.

In addition to her talk show, Oprah produced and co-starred in the 1989 drama miniseries, The Women of Brewster Place and a spin-off, Brewster Place. She later co-founded the womens cable television network called Oxygen. She is the president of Harpo Productions. She partnered with Discovery Communications to change Discovery Health Channel into a new channel called Oprah Winfrey Network. It was launched in 2011.

Oprah co-starred in The Color Purple and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. She is credited as a producer of a Broadway musical based on the Alice Walker novel. She voiced Gussie the goose for Charlottes Web in 2006, Judge Bumbleden in Bee Movie in 2007 and Eudora in Disneys The Princess and the Frog in 2010.

In 2005, Harpo Productions released a film adaptation of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. In 2008, the company signed an exclusive output agreement to develop and produce scripted series, documentaries and movies for HBO.
Oprah has co-authored five books including a weight loss book in 2005. Her memoir, The Life You Want, is scheduled for publication in 2017. She publishes magazines like O and the Oprah Magazine. She created the Oprah.com website to provide resources and interactive content related to her magazines, shows book club and charity. Her website receives more than 70 million page views per month.

Oprah has a significant role as a spiritual leader and an icon of church-free spirituality. Her show has highlighted inspirational and uplifting themes since the 1990s.
